• Who Should Know You Are Moving Home?

art-8Moving house is one of the most stressful things you will ever do. In the stress of a move, you may have overlooked the fact that you really need to let people know where you are going, and some people need informing earlier than others. There are many people, businesses, and personal contact who will need to know when you are making your move and where you are going to, so it’s important to think of these before you start the moving process to avoid any hassle and complications once you have settled into your new home.  In the article below we list the groups of people you need to inform of your relocation and when you should let them know.

    Friends and relatives

240You should inform your friends and relatives of your new address and location in case of emergencies. They may also be a great help and offer a helping hand with the move! Many members of your family or friendship groups are wonderful at looking after pets and children when you are in the midst of a move, so it’s a good idea to let them know as soon as you plan your moving date, in order that you can take all offers of help. You may even find that someone has a van you can use, and you surely will have some that can help with the lifting of heavy furniture. You may offer to return the favour when they move, or you could think about thanking them with a party or meal afterwards, once you are all settled in.

    Bank or Building Society

242It is important to inform your Bank or Building Society of your new address as soon as possible so that any important correspondence and statements are sent to your new address from the day that you move to avoid any private and confidential mail being opened by the new people living in your old property. We all need to be security conscious in this day and age, and if you look at the newspapers these days, there are incidents of identity theft reported almost daily. Once you have informed your bank or building society, usually by visiting the branch, its often a good idea to visit the post office and put a redirection plan into action. This will ensure any mail in the crossover period is sent to your new address. Usually this period is about 6 weeks, so you can be sure to have made arrangements to change your address with most people during this time.

    Credit Card & Loan Companies

In order to avoid any inconvenience and any statements or private mail being read by the new occupiers of your old property, it is best to inform your credit card or loan provider of your new address in advance. The last thing you want is an unexpected bill after you have moved into your new home, because you hadn’t received the last one in the post.  Again, make sure you visit the post office in order to inform them you require the crossover period of redirection.
